Graduation Analysis

Nerd Corner

The milkround brings students from various degrees and institutions together in competition for trainee places. In the above interactive graphic I try to put some context on the numbers involved by looking at graduation statistics for 2009 to 2012 of postgraduate courses in accounting and undergraduate courses in business related areas. Feel free to play around with the slicers on the right hand side which allow you to slice and dice the data for your own comparison. I have outlined below a summary of the steps I used to create this graphic;

  • I gathered all my data from the HEA website and cleaned it up;
  • Note I only took postgrad courses (both Taught Masters (“TM”) and the Postgrad Diploma (“PG Dip”)) classified in the acccounting section. For the undergraudate courses (I only took honours degrees) I took general business (“UG – Biz”), finance (“UG – Fin”) and accounting & taxation (“UG – Acc & Tax”) classifications;
  • Once the data was structured I then created a pivot table in excel to easily analyse that data. To supplement this analysis I also created a pivot chart; and
  • Finally I inserted slicers (the boxes on the right hand side of the graphic which allow you to quickly “slice” the data).
